Panoramica vs Sharesight

Sharesight has done Australian and New Zealand tax reporting and broker imports for more than 15 years. Panoramica is a newer iPhone and iPad app built to show where a portfolio is concentrated. It also stores a bond's coupon and maturity and a property's address, which Sharesight files as custom investments.

Which suits whom

Both are good at different things. The shape of your portfolio decides.

Choose Panoramica if

You hold more than shares and want to know where the risk sits, on iPhone or iPad.

  • You hold bonds, metals or property and want their details on record: coupon, maturity, weight in ounces, address.
  • You want Monte Carlo runs, a correlation matrix, FIFO, LIFO or HIFO cost basis, and a warning when one holding passes 25%.
  • You mostly manage money on an iPhone or iPad and want an app laid out for that screen.
  • You don't need country tax reports because an accountant or another tool handles your tax.

Choose Sharesight if

You live in Australia, New Zealand or the UK and want broker auto-imports and tax reports for your country.

  • You file tax in AU, NZ, UK, CA or US and want CGT and dividend reports ready to hand over.
  • You want one-click imports from CommSec, CMC Markets, Selfwealth and 200+ other brokers.
  • Your portfolio is mostly shares, ETFs, managed funds and dividend payers.
  • You would rather work in a desktop browser than on a phone.

Where the differences show

Tax reporting, where Sharesight leads

Country tax reports are the main reason people pick Sharesight. Australian accountants cite it often, because it produces the CGT report pre-formatted and handles franking credits and dividend reinvestment plans without extra setup. New Zealand gets similar coverage, and the UK, Canada and the US are covered too.

Panoramica produces no country tax reports. It records realised gains against a FIFO, LIFO or HIFO cost basis and exports them as CSV or PDF for your accountant. It will not build an ATO myTax export.

If your year revolves around tax time, Sharesight is the better tool.

Where bonds and property go

Sharesight's "unlisted investments" feature takes almost any asset, but it is a catch-all. A bond becomes an unlisted investment with a value, and its coupon rate, maturity date and payment frequency have nowhere to live. Property is the same: a number you update by hand.

Panoramica gives each class its own fields. A bond keeps its coupon, maturity and payment frequency, and the app works out its yield to maturity. A property has an address and a type. Metals are held in troy ounces by metal and priced at spot, and cash can sit in any of 37 currencies. Those fields feed the analysis, so bond coupons show up in your income and foreign cash shows up in your currency exposure.

Risk: a breakdown or a warning

Sharesight's diversity report breaks holdings down by country, sector, currency and asset class. It shows what you own.

Panoramica checks the same four cuts against fixed limits. It warns when one holding passes 25% of the portfolio, the top three pass 60%, one sector passes 40% or one currency passes 80%. On top of that come Monte Carlo projections over 1,000 runs, a correlation matrix, scenario analysis ("what if equities fall 30%?") and a portfolio review that sets your own holdings and weights against limits you can change.

iPhone and iPad, or the browser

Sharesight is a 15-year-old web product with a companion mobile app. Its workflows and layouts assume a desktop screen.

Panoramica runs only on iPhone and iPad, and every screen is laid out for them. Sharesight works in any browser and has an Android app. Panoramica has neither, so without an iPhone or iPad it is not an option.

Price

Sharesight prices in AUD and caps holdings on its lower tiers. At current exchange rates, Panoramica Pro at US$99.99 a year costs less than Sharesight Starter (A$228 a year, billed annually) and under a third of Premium (A$588).

Questions

Should I use Sharesight if I file tax in Australia?

Probably, if your year leans on the ATO myTax export and dividend reports that account for franking credits. Sharesight was built around Australian and New Zealand tax time. The two can sit side by side: Panoramica for portfolio analysis, Sharesight or your accountant for tax.

Can I migrate my Sharesight portfolio to Panoramica?

Yes. Export your holdings from Sharesight as CSV and import the file in Panoramica under Settings → Import. Tickers, quantities, cost bases and dates come across. Bond coupons, metal weights and property addresses can be added during the import or afterwards.

Does Panoramica auto-import from CommSec or CMC Markets like Sharesight does?

Not directly. Panoramica imports from selected US and global brokers, and its Australian coverage is much thinner than Sharesight's 200+ integrations. If broker imports decide it and you are in Australia or New Zealand, Sharesight is the stronger choice.

Does Panoramica handle dividends as well as Sharesight?

Panoramica records dividends and reinvestments and projects future income. Sharesight's dividend tracking has a strong reputation in its category, particularly for DRPs and franking credits, so an investor who mainly holds dividend payers will find it ahead. In Panoramica, dividends are one input to the wider analysis.

What does Panoramica do that Sharesight doesn't?

It records bonds, metals and property with their own fields, and warns at set concentration limits such as 25% in one holding or 80% in one currency. It runs Monte Carlo projections and a correlation matrix, lists the trades that would bring the portfolio back inside your limits, and works offline. Sharesight does not publicly document any of these.

Is Panoramica available on web like Sharesight?

No. Panoramica runs on iPhone and iPad only. Sharesight has a web app and mobile apps, so if you need a browser, Sharesight or another web tracker is the better pick.

Why is Panoramica cheaper than Sharesight Premium?

Panoramica is an iPhone and iPad app built by one developer, and its costs look nothing like those of a 15-year-old company maintaining hundreds of broker integrations. Pro costs US$99.99 a year, less than Sharesight Starter. In exchange you get fewer broker integrations and no country tax reports.

Does Panoramica work in New Zealand / Canada / UK?

Yes. Panoramica handles 37 base currencies and five languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and German), with live prices for global share markets, crypto and metals. What it lacks next to Sharesight is the country tax report.
